As a natural science illustrator, I am equal parts artist, naturalist, and storyteller. I combine my biology background, technical drawing skills, and strong sense of design to translate scientific concepts into visual stories that are engaging and educational. My illustration process is guided by my curiosity, and I aim to celebrate the natural world by depicting my subjects beautifully. I use traditional media as well as digital methods. Whenever possible, I work from life. Experiencing a subject in nature is an essential part of telling its story.
With my children’s picture book illustrations, I want to encourage kids of all ages to get outside, explore the animals and environments around them, and have adventures that help them build a great appreciation for nature. I hope that as they turn the pages, they spend a few extra moments wandering through each picture and imagining what they could find beyond its borders.
Meg Sodano grew up in Connecticut, exploring the woodlands and seashore and drawing her favorite animals. Some summers spent in the Green Mountains eventually lured her northward to earn a BS in Biology and Animal Science (pre-veterinary focus) at the University of Vermont. Years later, realizing a way to weave biology into her artistic roots, she sought formal illustration training at Rhode Island School of Design and received certificates in Natural Science Illustration and Children’s Book Illustration.
As a member of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, Meg has shown work at several juried exhibitions. She has taught drawing and painting workshops aboard a Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic ship in the Galápagos, has been an-artist-residence at Edmund Niles Huyck Preserve and Platte Clove Preserve in the Catskill Mountains. Her illustrations are part of the interpretive exhibits at Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut, Huyck Preserve in New York, and the Franklin Park Children’s Zoo in Boston.
