About the Artist

As a natural science illustrator, I am equal parts artist, naturalist, and storyteller. I combine my biology background, technical drawing skills, and strong sense of design to translate scientific concepts into visual stories that are engaging and educational. My illustration process is guided by my curiosity, and I aim to celebrate the natural world by depicting my subjects beautifully. I use traditional media as well as digital methods. Whenever possible, I work from life. Experiencing a subject in nature is an essential part of telling its story.

With my children’s picture book illustrations, I want to encourage kids of all ages to get outside, explore the animals and environments around them, and have adventures that help them build a great appreciation for nature. I hope that as they turn the pages, they spend a few extra moments wandering through each picture and imagining what they could find beyond its borders.

Meg Sodano grew up in Connecticut, exploring the woodlands and seashore and drawing her favorite animals.  Some summers spent in the Green Mountains eventually lured her northward to earn a BS in Biology and Animal Science (pre-veterinary focus) at the University of Vermont. Years later, realizing a way to weave biology into her artistic roots, she sought formal illustration training at Rhode Island School of Design and received certificates in Natural Science Illustration and Children’s Book Illustration.

In 2019 Meg received the John Burroughs Association Riverby Award for her illustrations in Salamander Sky, a narrative non-fiction picture book about the migration of spotted salamanders. She is a member of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators and has shown work at several juried exhibitions. She has taught drawing and painting workshops aboard a Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic ship in the Galápagos, has been an artist-in-residence at Edmund Niles Huyck Preserve and Platte Clove Preserve in the Catskill Mountains. Her illustrations are part of the interpretive exhibits at Queens Botanical Garden (New York), Franklin Park Children’s Zoo (Boston), Huyck Preserve (upstate New York), and Mystic Aquarium (Connecticut).
